THE STORY CHALLENGE

to see each other as people again

3_worth telling.jpg

The Story Challenge seeks to break down the barriers that isolate us by helping us to see every person we encounter as the unique and unrepeatable work of art that they are, no matter their race, color, creed, sexual orientation, or political stance. Everyone has a story. Stories have power. They reach deeper than our minds and touch our hearts.

When you tell your story, you see yourself with new eyes and take new ownership of your identity – allowing you to go forward with renewed confidence. When you listen to another person’s story you see them as a person – not just a label or a stance – and you begin to recognize their enormous dignity and worth.

Let’s use the digital world for good. Let’s use it to be real, to reach out and to come to know one another. Let’s use it to find our common ground so that we can stand together there and collaborate to make a better world.

A FEW GUIDELINES

  1. Record a simple video of yourself – 5 minutes long –  naming 4 things you love, 3 people who were formative to who you are, 2 times that your life changed, and 1 thing that motivates or inspires you. Be brave! It takes courage to share your story, but your vulnerability helps others to open up as well.

  2. NO POLITICS! Politics and the just governance of a nation are GOOD, and in fact wildly important, but they’ve also become mind-bogglingly divisive in exactly the way we’re trying to step back from. So, just for five minutes, step back from the labels and the party divisions and tell us about who YOU are.

  3. It shouldn’t be perfect. This is about connecting with real people. It also is dependent on people actually recording the videos AND watching the videos other people post. Don’t make it too complicated or spend hours and hours making sure you picked your four absolute, undisputed favorite things. Just tell us this little snapshot of your story and be who you are.

  4. That said, don't be afraid to get creative with how you share it - just make sure that your creativity is helping to show who you really are. Don't be creative in making up a different version of yourself to share, be creative about how to most genuinely share who you are.

  5. Share your video and add the hashtag #thetellyourstorychallenge so others can find your story.

  6. Tag your friends to challenge them to share their stories. Then watch the stories of other people – people you know and people you don’t - reach out and respond to their stories, and challenge yourself to see every person you encounter as more than their labels and their politics.

  7. "Don't be a turd" (shouts out to Chris Pratt) - be kind, be courteous, be a force for good.
